L-ergothioneine offers powerful and universal protection against oxidative stress in both cells and mitochondria. Experimental evidence has also shown that L-ergothioneine can inhibit the synthesis of pro-inflammatory cytokines, which are abundant in many chronic inflammatory diseases associated with aging. It may support healthy aging by delaying shortening of telomeres and protecting DNA. It may also support vision, cognition, and cardiovascular health.

Ergothioneine is found in high concentrations in certain edible mushrooms such as porcini, and your body can’t make it. A new proprietary fermentation method has made it possible to provide cost-effective supplementation of this nutrient. Out of all nutrients and phytochemicals, ergothioneine is most strongly correlated with longevity, and may reduce the risk of dying from all causes by 16%. Studies have shown this amino acid has a highly specific mechanism to transport itself into cells and is considered a putative vitamin.

Ergothioneine concentrations are particularly high in the brain, including those regions responsible for cognition, learning, memory, and vision. Low blood levels have been noted in patients with both mild cognitive impairment and dementia, including alzheimers and parkinsons disease. L-ergothioneine promotes nerve cell maturation and neurogenesis, resulting in enhanced memory. In a clinical trial of adults with mild cognitive impairment, taking a mushroom extract standardized for 5 mg of L-ergothioneine daily for 12 weeks led to significant improvements in working memory, verbal memory, sustained attention, and other measures of cognitive function compared to those taking a placebo.

L-ergothioneine has been found to be protective against different types of oxidative and inflammatory damage in endothelial cells which form the inner lining of blood vessels. It also protects against cell stressors that impair vascular relaxation, and prevents the binding of monocytes (a type of white blood cell) to endothelial cells, an early event in cardiovascular disease. A large population study published in 2020 showed that higher levels of ergothioneine in the body are associated with a reduction in cardiometabolic diseases by 15%, cardiovascular mortality by 21%, and overall mortality by 14%. Other studies revealed that ergothionine protects the endothelium from cell death.

Research also suggests ergothioneine may improve markers associated with fitness and muscle health. One study found that administration ergothioneine to mice increased time to exhaustion during aerobic activity and enhanced protein synthesis post-exercise.

In summary, ergothioneine’s potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects may help slow the aging process and protect the body against age-related disorders, including neurodegeneration and cardiovascular diseases.

We use a traditional eco-friendly glass bottle with cork for ease of use. Bottle contains one gram, providing a 200 days worth supply at the dose used in human trials (5mg). For optimal absorption, drop one rounded microscoop (included) under the tongue (sublingual administration) or between the teeth and cheeks (buccal administration).
