Recent studies have shown that a single 3 minute exposure to 670nm deep red light in the morning can improve visual color contrast for the entire week, via improvement of the retina's photoreceptors. This effect was seen in healthy subjects. Other research has shown improvements in visual acuity and macular perimetry in those with age-related macular degeneration. Red light therapy invigorates the mitochondria, thus increasing energy supply and enhancing metabolic repair processes.

Red light therapy has also gained persistent worldwide attention in recent years as a novel scientific approach for the treatment of myopia.
